Robert : Philosopher Bela Tarr

Bela Tarr

Posted on May 18th, 2008 by Robert : Philosopher Robert
Bela Tarr's films are extraordinary.  I am so excited that within the next week or two I will finally get the chance to see his "Satantango."  His "Werckmesiter Harmonies" is both breathtaking and cultivates the mysteries.  Ingmar Bergmann once said that the point of art is to deepen the mystery.  Tarr deepens the mysteries for me.  Unfortunately, much of Tarr's work, like his vaunted masterpiece "Satantango", is unavailable in the States.  This owes to distribution controls, controls on flows of capital, and is a terrible shame.  When a few days ago I blogged that cinematography brings meaning to my life, I was thinking of a scene from Tarr's "Almanac of Fall."  I need to see that film again.  And the opening shot (over 9 mins) of his "Werckmeister Harmonies" is one of the greatest moments in cinema history--for me!
